The Alcazar of the Christian Kings
Alfonso XI began the construction of the royal residence partlyupon the plot of the original Alcazar of the caliphate. The buildingwas extended from 1327 with four gothic towers, of which threeremain: the ‘Homage’, ‘Lion’, and ‘Inquisition’Towers. The Alcazarwas also the royal residence for other monarchs such as PedroI, Enrique II, Enrique IV and the Catholic Kings, with its Patio deArmas and gardens of arabic influence, with its ample multilevelreservoirs. Roman remains may also be found in the building. The Inquisition settled here after 1482, and the Alcazar wasalso used as a jail for many centuries to follow.THE MEZQUITA, ALCAZAR AND SYNAGOGUE PERFECTLYEXEMPLIFY THE TRIPLE IDENTITY OF HISTORIC CORDOBA:MUSLEM, CHRISTIAN AND JEWISH, BUT THERE IS YET MORETO SEE IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF THIS WORLD HERITAGESITE…The SynagogueCompleted in 1315, this is the only synagogue of medieval originstill existing in Andalucia. Astunning example of Mudejar design,it has been occupied for all number of different reasons sincethe Jewish expulsion in 1492: from a school and hermitage, toa hospital for rabies victims. Its restuaration began in 1884,following the discovery of its fascinating rooom of plaster castfigures, replete with vegetable leitmotifs and psalm inscriptions.
